Sonia Winder, one of Tilhill’s Forest Managers, has successfully been elected to the Council of the Institute of Chartered Foresters.
Sonia has worked in the forestry industry since her graduation from Bangor University in 1992 with an MSc in Environmental Forestry. She joined Tilhill and became a Chartered Forester in 1996.
The Institute of Chartered Foresters is the UK’s Royal Chartered body for professional foresters and arboriculturists. The Institute exists to maintain and improve standards of practice in forestry, to advance, spread, and promote all aspects of forestry, especially in the UK, and to encourage the study of forestry.
Sonia’s service on the Council is honorary and will require a few days a year alongside her day job as a Forest Manager. She will help to oversee the control and management of the Institute’s affairs, and to ensure that the objectives of the Institute are upheld.
Following her election Sonia said: “I’m thrilled to have been elected and am looking forward to serving the Institute and its members. I’d like to thank all those Members who voted for me, and Tilhill for giving me time to devote to the role.”
Shireen Chambers, Executive Director of the Institute of Chartered Foresters said: “We are delighted that Sonia is joining the Institute’s ruling body and will play a role in determining the future direction of the profession. Sonia’s experience as a practitioner in the private sector in Wales will greatly complement other skills on the Council. I look forward to working with her”.
Sonia manages 800 hectares of mixed Welsh woodlands, and also carries out a variety of contracting work for both private and public sector clients. This has included everything from veteran tree work to the creation of new amenity and commercial woodlands.
