Building Skills. Creating Futures. Strengthening Communities.

Tilhill Forestry and Foresight Sustainable Forestry Company are proud to relaunch the Foresight Sustainable Forestry Skills Training Programme in Wales for 2025. A hands-on, fully funded training opportunity that equips local people with the skills to build rewarding careers in forestry.

Now in its third year, this pioneering programme was shortlisted for the 2025 Confor “Changing Attitudes” Award in recognition of its role in shifting public perceptions around afforestation and land use change. With an ever-growing interest in sustainable careers across rural Wales, the programme has already helped the younger generation find their feet and their future, in forestry.

Where and When?

Delivered in partnership with Coleg Cambria Llysfasi, this year’s training will run across four weeks in Autumn 2025 at sites across Wales.

Training dates are as follows:

  •  Introductory Day: 27 October 2025
  • Block One: 27–31 October 2025
  • Block Two: 3–7 November 2025
  • Block Three: 17–21 November 2025
  • Final Session: 27–28 November 2025

All training is in-person and fully funded. This includes accommodation, travel, personal protective equipment (PPE), tools, and even compensation for any lost earnings during the training period.

What You’ll Learn

Trainees will gain a practical foundation in modern forestry, from operational skills to site safety and equipment handling. Training modules will include:

  • Safe and effective chainsaw use
  •  Tractor driving and quad bike handling
  • PA1 and PA6 spraying certifications
  • Emergency first aid in the forestry environment
  • Tree planting and establishment techniques

This course is designed to prepare you for the realities of working on active forestry sites, and to give you the confidence to take your next steps in the industry.

Who Should Apply?

We’re looking for people based in Wales who are:

  • Enthusiastic about working outdoors
  •  Motivated to build a long-term career in forestry
  • Adaptable, reliable and eager to learn new skills
  • Are over 18

You don’t need any prior experience or formal qualifications. Whether you’re currently working in agriculture or contracting or are simply looking for a new challenge that supports your community and the environment, this programme could be the perfect fit.

What Happens Next?

All successful applicants will be paired with a dedicated Tilhill Forestry mentor to support their progression. After completing the course, trainees will be encouraged to apply for live roles within the Forestry sector, be it with Tilhill Forestry, the wider BSW Group, or on one of Foresight’s many projects across Wales.

You’ll also receive a Certificate of Training, marking your achievement and giving you a valuable head start in a growing industry.

A Programme with Proven Impact

Since its launch in 2022, the Foresight Skills Training Programme has drawn praise from communities and industry leaders alike. In 2024 alone, over 70 individuals applied, with those who successfully complete the course now employed in the forestry sector. The programme was formally recognised by Confor for helping to positively reshape public attitudes towards sustainable land use.

This isn’t just a training course. It’s a chance to be part of something bigger, a movement that’s actively restoring landscapes, boosting biodiversity, and providing rural communities with future ready careers.
