The UK Woodland Assurance Standard (UKWAS) has enabled 1.4 million hectares of woodland in the UK to gain certification under two internationally recognised schemes:
- The FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council®)
- PEFC (Programme for Endorsement of Forest Certification)
Both of these certifications recognise UKWAS as the standard for forest certification in the UK.

Tilhill has been providing a service to woodland owners since 1999, allowing them to be certified within our Group scheme whether their forests are managed by Tilhill or others.
More than just a certification, with Tilhill Forestry
Tilhill controls the largest FSC® and PEFC Certification Scheme in the UK, with almost 50% of the privately owned certified woodland within our scheme.Â
Lead by a dedicated Certification Manager we have a team of experienced forest managers across the country who help woodland owners maintain compliance to the UKWAS and so ensure access to timber markets and the price premium often paid for certified timber.
Our audit team also value to the woodlands within our scheme by advising owners on how to continually improve the management of their forests by providing advice on changes to legislation, funding streams and best practice.
Group Scheme Membership
By joining Tilhill’s Group Scheme all members:
- Commits to conformance to the certification standard
- Has declared an intention to protect and maintain the woodland management unit and its ecological integrity in the short and long term.
A statement of these commitments is included in the property declaration of commitment and is publicly available.
