The UK Timber Processing Industry

UK timber consumption and production

The UK is a major wood consumer with annual consumption of around 47 million cubic metres per annum (m3/yr).

Total UK timber production is 11.5 million tonnes per year, so the UK still only supplies around a quarter of its total timber requirements.

The UK wood processing industry creates an estimated £6.5bn Gross Value Added (GVA) per annum (2012).

Softwood and Hardwood

The vast majority of UK timber production is softwood (11 million tonnes per year) with only a small component (0.5 million tonnes per year) of hardwood.

The term 'softwood' refers to coniferous timber, whilst 'hardwood' refers to timber from broadleaves.  Some softwoods, such as yew are actually very hard, whilst some hardwoods, such as balsa wood are very soft, so this is not a very descriptive term!
